Medicare for All Advocates and Supporters Demand Answers from NJ Elected Officials

NJUHC joined with NNU and other national organizations in organizing Medicare for All People’s Assemblies in New Jersey. Efforts focused on putting pressure on legislators who have not signed in support of Medicare for All Act of 2019, H.R. 1384. These efforts included convening People’s Assemblies, rallies, and participating in Congressional Town Hall meetings to demand answers.

Efforts included:

July 30 Rally and March to Congressman Pallone’s Office

On July 30, the 54th anniversary of the enactment of Medicare and Medicaid, NJUHC and Our Revolution Monmouth members marched to Representative Pallone’s Long Branch office and delivered hundreds of postcards and petitions in support of Medicare for All Act of 2019, H.R. 1384 from constituents and other NJ voters, and allies from Michigan. Our delegation met with the Congressman’s district director, Matthew Montekio and presented him with passionate and well-informed testimonials in support of single-payer healthcare.

August 5 Meeting at Representative Norcross Office, Cherry Hill

A great group of CD-1 constituents met with Congressman Norcross’ District Director, Mary Cruz, in Cherry Hill on August 5, 2019 to urge Norcross to co-sponsor H.R.1384, Medicare for All Act of 2019, as he did with H.R. 676, Expanded and Improved Medicare for All Act in the last legislative session.

August 8 Medicare For All People’s Assembly, Long Branch

We had a great turnout for our August 8 People’s Assembly for Medicare for All at the Long Branch Public Library. The purpose of the assembly was to put pressure on Congressman Pallone to support H.R. 1384 and schedule hearings on the bill in the House Energy and Commerce Committee that he chairs.  Speakers included Anna-Marta Visky, Karen White, and Ayesha Mughal from the NJUHC, as well as Red Bank Councilwoman Kate L. Triggiano. Attendees shared their powerful personal stories, and we made plans for our next collective actions in the fight to win Medicare for  All.

August 15 Representative Pallone Town Hall, Metuchen

At Representative Pallone’s Metuchen town hall event, a strong and diverse team of bird-doggers put the Congressman on the spot with direct questions about his stance on Medicare for All and challenged him to stand up for healthcare as a human right. While his refusal is disappointing, we will not stop until everyone in this country gets the healthcare they need!

August 29 Representative Kim Town Hall, Forked River

While the town hall was geared towards decommissioning of the local nuclear plant, many major media outlets were in attendance and took note of our presence with our Medicare 4 All signs. Interviews were held by the Huffington Post, NY Times, and others. Noticed by many, the event was a success. Tom Cannova, NJUHC Board Member representing NJ Green Party, attended the Town Hall and was quoted in the New York Times emphasizing the importance of Medicare for All.
